“Buy A Kid A Book” DWC Project

About the Project & Ellis Elementary

DWC and its leadership team have a heart for enhancing literacy in our community. Our club was seeking a way to ensure that all children in our community had access to quality reading materials. Focusing on one of the Title I schools in our area (Suella Gilbert Ellis Elementary School in Manassas), the club established communication and was made aware of the many needs for supporting literacy at that facility.

Working with the reading specialists, teachers, and the school librarian, DWC conceived the idea of providing each child in grades K-2 with a book of their own at their fall Book Fair. This was particularly impactful for this school population since over 40% of the students come from families at or below the poverty level. Many families are homeless or transient; moms and dads often do not have the means to purchase books to keep their children reading, advancing their knowledge and enhancing their reading skills.

Through the co-operation of Scholastic books, DWC was able to ensure that each student grades K-2 selected a book of their very own from selected titles at the school book fair. DWC provides monies to fund the purchase to the Ellis principal. Students are thrilled to learn that the club has “adopted” them.
